    Description

This is an old  Forest Service sign for tree identification. Reads "This Tree is a Ponderosa Pine
(Pinus Ponderosa) and is suitable for general buildingpurposes and for paper pulp. Reaches commercial size (2 ft. in diameter at 130 to 170 years. A 2-ft. tree contains about 700 board feet of lumber. It attains an age of 300 years, a diameter of 4 or 5 ft., and a lumber
content of 4,000 board feet (enough to build a good sized house). The so called "Black Jack"
with a black bark is simply a young one that has not reached maturity. In this spot many
generations of Ponderosa Pines have grown up, reproduced and then died of fires, insects or decay. It is to be hoped that future generations of trees will be spared from fires and other enemies and that when mature they will be converted into lumber for building houses. You can not burn your tree
and have it too....PREVENT FOREST FIRES".
It is made of paper and measures appx. 9" x 11".
It has light edge wear and a staple hole at the top. According to the information I've gathered this was the official  FS emblem used from 1920-1938. This one is not  dated.
