Description

This auction is for a piece of the Babylon 5: Into the Fire collectible set made by Sierra OnLine in the late 90's. You will receive a Babylon 5 Watch with leather strap, featuring a Shadow vessel on the face.  The original warranty card is also included. The watch was manufactured by the Europa Watch Company, and features quartz movement and a genuine leather strap.
The development on Babylon 5: In to the Fire - The Ultimate Space Combat Game (a.k.a. Babylon 5 Combat Simulator) started in 1998 by Sierra FX, Yosemite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Unfortunately Sierra cancelled the game in September 21st 1999.
Although the game never made it, some merchandise items were produced. These included f.ex. a prototype flip box, a poster, a 3D lenticular mouse pad, a wrist watch and a magnet.
Read on for a little bit of history behind this rare item:
In 1997, Sierra OnLine (now known as Vivendi Universal Games) announced Babylon 5: Into the Fire , a 3D space combat game based on the Hugo award-winning sci-fi series created by J. Michael Straczynski. Developed by Sierra's Yosemite Entertainment division, the game was, at the time, revolutionary. Allowing the player to rise up through the ranks of Earthforce in the role of pilot and -- eventually -- capital ship commander, the game's story was written under the approval of JMS himself, and featured cut scenes filmed on the real Babylon 5 sets with the original cast, including Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Jerry Doyle and more.
Alas, the dream of many B5 fans would not see the light of day. After 2 years of development, as progress on the game was coming along nicely, the axe fell: a reorganization at Sierra resulted in the closure of the Yosemite division. An attempt was made to bring development of the game over to Sierra's headquarters in California, but the cost allocated to the move of the development team was unfairly added to the game's budget; seen by management as a money pit, the game was canceled.
Not to be defeated, many of the game's original developers, with help from fans, formed their own development studio in an attempt to rescue the unfinished game and the B5 footage from Sierra. Unfortunately, Sierra refused to sell the intellectual property, and the game -- along with the shot footage from the original sets, was lost forever.
During the marketing push for the B5 game, Sierra commissioned some officially licensed Babylon 5 collectibles as promotional material. Once Sierra canceled the game and eventually lost their B5 license, they could no longer sell B5 merchandise. The watch included in this auction is among the last of the memorabilia that bears the B5, Warner Brothers, Babylonian Productions and SierraFX logos. The game will never see the light of day, but you can own a piece of its history.
